For working with not only the visible but also the invisible dimension of a country populated by the wounds of its disappeared. For bringing to the surface that which is hidden, creating an essay that invites the viewer to dig into Mexico’s violent history, while pointing to the importance of building other possible worlds.

Ofelia Ladrón de Guevara reviews Totem for Icónica,
10 July 2023 ︎︎︎
The images in Totem present an absence. However, as one part of the film mentions, “the void is not filled with a positive form.” Therefore, it is not enough to affirm the absence in order to show it. This being so, the documentary, in its attempt to speak, goes to the root of the images, to the connections between them.

REVIEW
Pablo Gamba reviews Totem for Los Experimentos,
13 April 2023 ︎︎︎
Totem is a film essay on disappearance in Mexico that, in line with what has been said about the collective and its way of understanding the practice of cinema, is located at the antipodes of the political-spectacular of “Ruido” (Mexico-Argentina, 2022), by Natalia Beristáin, to give a recent and well-known example. The premise of the impossibility of giving an image of “the disappeared” brings Tótem into contrast with films that, by doing so in one way or another, produce imaginary answers to the social demand for truth, even with the best of intentions.

Juana Schlenker, Juan Camilo Álvarez, and Carlos Alberto Amaya award Totem with the Critics Mention for Best Iberoamerican Film at MIDBO 24 ︎︎︎
We chose to give this award to the documentary Totem because of the way in which it addresses urgent issues of the Latin American reality, dislocating the relationship between images and words in a way that opens spaces for reflection and insight into issues that require our attention and creativity. The film also poses a stimulating dialogue with this year's MIDBO proposal to think about the emotions that the real transmits and generates, in this case through an archive of images, understood in a broad sense and in its relationship with the word. ︎︎︎
